Greetings from Carrboro,
It’s a good thing not to let tradition get mired in the truth. That just confuses things. Take Thanksgiving. The ‘70s had this just about right. I would bring home from school the ubiquitous construction paper handprint turkey along with a romanticized version of Pocahontas and Christopher Columbus eating a delicious pilgrim’s potluck. I’m sure you can see it, too: Men in knickers with belt buckles on their hats sitting down at a very large table alongside folks with fringed suede outfits and colorful feathers in their straight, black hair. And a good time was had by all. I assumed the settlers brought the canned cranberry sauce and pecan pie.
Now, I imagine the truth to be more along the lines of starving, abandoned Europeans eating boiled rodents, acorns and some sort of lukewarm mush. And you’ve got to figure that the whole language/cultural barrier-thing interrupted the spontaneous group hug. “Dances With Wolves” becomes “Eats Like Scared Possum.” And you know, I don’t even think Norman Rockwell could create a bucolic drawing of dear ol’ dad divvying up the poached squirrel. God forbid using an electric knife on that slimy little bastard.
So, thank your lucky stars a large dose of culinary fiction was added to a much bleaker truth. I am guessing that the original meal was organic and locally sourced. Completely. Got to give them that. But I’ll keep the gravy and stuffing, thank you very much. Thanksgiving at Acme – the no dishes, no shopping, no worries version of the American classic. Thursday November 24th. Noon until 8pm.
