Week @ Acme 11/3

 11/3/11

Greetings from Carrboro,

My mother is from the South. So much so that she once ate three-fourths of the professed “best hot dog of her life” before she realized she had never put the wiener in the bun. I swear. Southerners, you see, like to put food on food. And then more stuff on top of that. And, well, more still if no one’s watching. Or if it’s just family. We’re a bit condiment-obsessed. It clearly wasn’t my mother’s fault. The hot dog has always been just an excuse for piling on everything else.

My father did not have such issues. His hot dog had mustard and onions only. He considered the fact that we had ketchup on the table – much less various pickles and relishes and chili and slaw and American cheese – an act of pure culinary heresy. But what the hell did he know? He was from Ohio. You should have seen his face when his kids crumbled potato chips on the top of the whole shebang. Priceless.

That’s probably why nouvelle cuisine never did so well around here. I mean, you can’t put gravy on it. Well, at least, not enough gravy. And it’s also probably why nachos aren’t a food trend that the South’s going to let go of anytime soon. Just guessing.

So, I’m not surprised the Acme walk-in refrigerator is chock full of buckets upon buckets filled with pickles and relishes and chutneys and jams that we’ve put up. Or the fact that I get noticeably twitchy when we have less than two gallons of Duke’s mayonnaise on the shelf. It’s in my blood. And to be sure, on most everything I eat. There could be worse things. Much worse.

Speaking of gravy, there are still reservations left for Thanksgiving at Acme. Thursday, November 24th, noon until 8pm. The cost is $27.95 per person for the three-course meal. Reservations are required in advance by phone (919 929 2263) as it will sell out. Year in and year out, Thanksgiving is always a great day at the restaurant. We hope you can join us. And don’t worry. There will be plenty of gravy. Promise.

Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.

Cheers,

The Staff at Acme
