Weekend @ Acme 8/17

I swore that I’d pick it up before market. Cross my heart, needles in eyes – the whole shebang. And I made it. Barely. Shocking, I know, but crazy-early Saturday mornings are not usually the apex of productivity for me. But there I was – again – picking up a half hog that had come to market in the front seat of an orange VW bus. Getting the largish pig into my car was easy. Getting it out. Not so much.
The fact is that leaving a pig in the back of your car for very long in mid-August is not a good idea. For, well, just a number of reasons. The problem was that I had help getting the pig into my car. But I only had myself to get it out of the car and into the kitchen. Thinking and – surprise – coffee was required. Because, realistically, you just can’t ask a stranger in a parking lot to help you carry a carcass. Pretty much, I like to believe that this is true under any and all circumstances.
So, lacking a better idea, the pig ended up wrapped around my shoulders like a ridiculously heavy, completely awkward, raw meat shawl. I know. Attractive. So Lady Gaga. A poor woman on her way to get her hair done gave me a very wide berth as I stumbled towards the back gate in my oh-so-practical clogs. “It’s a pig,” I told her trying to appear nonchalant. Like it was the what and not the why that bothered her. Eventually, I did make it into the kitchen. Surprisingly, no one got hurt. And the pig is delicious. That road from farm to fork is quite the scenic route.

There are still a few places left for our wine dinner on Wednesday, August 29th .with famed Italian Winemaker Giampaolo Tabarrini. Five Courses and Five Wines. $62 per person. Reservations are required. The shindig starts at 6:30. And it’s going to be good.
