Weekend @ Acme 9/20
Greetings from Carrboro,
The world of food competitions has, well, changed. From blue ribbons and pies and county fairs to primetime TV and monkfish liver desserts and instant mega-fame. Tattoos and testosterone and tiramisu. I, of course, trash-talked the whole phenomenom. Because food is subjective, right? Personal. It’s about place and time. One person’s priceless sushi is another person’s bait. And I’m just too old to use tweezers for plating food.
Then, I agreed to compete. I know. Flip. Flop. A chef challenge pairing food and wine in front a panel of food professionals and the press. The Allegrini Cook-off for a Cause that this year was held in San Francisco, Dallas, and Chapel Hill/Carrboro. Winner to get $3000 for a local charity of their choice. Really, how could I say no? What’s one little, itsy-bitsy competition? I mean, Gordon Ramsey was not even going to be in the same state. I did check.
And we won! Eternal fame and glory for Acme! And $3000 to Project Compassion! So now, I’ve got the bug. So anybody wanting to compete, bring it on. But no arm wrestling. Or jello. Please. The line of integrity that I redrew doesn’t go that far. Yet.
Soft Shell Crabs. Grilled Local New York Strip Steak. Acme Tomato Plate. Gangy’s Scuppernong Pie. Smoked Bluefish. Grilled 12 oz. Pork Chop with Local Pear Chutney. Acme Deluxe Burger. Eggplant Pirogues. Fried Oysters. Persimmon Spice Cake. Carolina Shrimp and Clam Stew. Grilled Vegetable Salad. Braised Lamb Tacos. Jerked Pork Belly with Hot Pepper Jelly. Apple Cobbler with Bourbon Hard Sauce. Pan-Seared Rainbow Trout with Country-style Broad Beans. Competition? Come on.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
