Greetings from Carrboro,
The Tomato Festival is here! The Tomato Festival is here! Tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday. So, so, soooo many glorious tomatoes. You could say that the kitchen is wading in every imaginable size, shape, and color of tomato that you can imagine. It’s quite the sight. And, still, we’re afraid that we’re going to run out. Or, more likely, it could be that we want to make sure that we have plenty for ourselves. Tomatoes this perfect brings out the greed in all of us.
For the uninitiated, this is the 15th incarnation of the Acme Tomato Festival. What started out as a whim has become a Carrboro institution. All weekend, everything on the menu features the very best in local tomatoes. And we are talking about a lot of them – right at 700 pounds – and every single one of them from Carrboro’s awesome Farmers’ Market. This is local cubed. We even have a sungold tomato cobbler. And it’s delicious. Really.
The Acme tomato plate. Housmade pasta with heirloom tomatoes and smoked ricotta. Beef tenderloin with 7 variety tomato and bread salad. Crab Cakes with Cherokee Purple tomato chutney. Paté with tomato jelly. Market salad with charred sungold vinagrette. Pecan-crusted fried chicken with tomato gravy. Fried green tomatoes. Cast-iron cornbread with gold tomato butter. Gazpacho! Slow-cooked tomato handpie. Roasted tomato macaroni and cheese. Bloody Marys and near perfect toma-tinis. It’s a celebration of summer. What’s not to love?
So, if you’re not at the beach or the mountains or the Outback of Australia, join us. Staycations have great restaurants, too.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
