Greetings from Carrboro,
We seriously bought him a pot just for this one thing. It was bright red. A classic Father’s Day gift if ever there was one. When the pot would randomly make a stovetop appearance on the weekend, everyone knew what that meant; Dad was cooking. You see, my father rarely cooked. For good reason. On the weekend, he usually just drank coffee and clipped coupons from the newspaper. And we all thought that was just hunky dory.
So why my father felt compelled occasionally to take over the kitchen is anyone’s guess. It was like a fever that came over him. And his ritualistic foray into the culinary breakfast arts consisted of a singular dish: toasted English muffin, warmed-up can of Del Monte stewed tomatoes, and poached eggs. He even gave it an eponymous name – eggs Callaghan. I think that it’s fair to say that the Benedict family did a little better with the whole breakfast legacy thing.
The speciality pot in question actually steamed the eggs in little Teflon cups. And the eggs were sort of flipped out on top of the muffin and the chunks of rather tepid, stewed tomatoes. Whether or not the meal was meant to be served cool or warm was a decision clearly left to the gods. The only real consistency was Dad burning himself trying to get the little egg cups out of the steamer and cursing at the pan’s poor design. And, of course, our proclamation of how delectable it was.
So, please don’t buy Dad a pot. Or any other what-the-hell gift that you might live to regret. Take him to brunch or, you know, dinner; feed the man’s soul. There’s no shopping. No wrapping. And it’s oh-so much more delicious. This year Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th and we’ll be open 10am – 3pm and 5:30pm – 9pm doling out some serious deliciousness to all the great dads out there. You really can’t go wrong. And don’t worry, eggs Callaghan won’t be on the menu.
And our $10 Sunday brunch deal continues this week. Every entrée on the menu is just ten bucks. It nearly costs that much just to stay in bed. And who says Sundays can’t be great?
