Greetings from Carrboro,
My mother never once wore a bonnet. To my memory, at least. And our family did not hunt for Easter eggs. Though, as the youngest, the pre-dawn parental energy required to hide the eggs could’ve run its course by the time I was old enough to tromp around with a basket.
But we always dressed up to go to church, ate ham for the big meal of the day, and argued over how to properly eat a chocolate rabbit. And, more than likely, some neighborhood version of baseball would always break out in the grassy backyard next door.
Though we certainly would have gone to brunch if such a thing had existed. In North Carolina. You see, in 1980, that restaurant Rubicon had yet to be crossed. But by that time, my parents had discovered brunch in California – oh, yes – and brought back those memories to Charlotte as I imagine some Victorian naturalist brought back rare and exotic orchids to London from deepest New Guinea. Eggs Benedict and crepes and quiche and avocados. Fruits and buttery croissants and mimosas. It was a litany of epicurean fantasies wrapped in the already unsurpassable, sun-kissed wonder that was – in their eyes – California.
Thankfully, brunch did make it this far across the country. And it’s been a signature of Acme for 28 years – albeit with a distinctly more southern accent. I’d say that there’s little doubt that brunch and Easter are a perfect match. Easter Brunch just feels right. Because a bowl of Rice Krispies or some gooey protein shake sounds like a fairly depressing start to a holiday. Whereas just saying “hot donuts” immediately puts you in a better mood. And I’m not going to even start on what happens when you take a bite.
You know the other thing that goes perfectly with Easter? Not cooking. Or shopping or stressing or whatever extras you might find in that you’ve stuffed into that holiday bag of tricks. So let us cook for you. So you can do you. The Acme Easter Feast To-Go. It feeds two people brilliantly and does wonders to that daunting holiday to-do list that you keep not wanting to think about. The cost for the meal is $75 and the menu is below. Pick-up is Saturday (4/19) between 1pm-3pm. The cutoff to order the meal is 5pm tomorrow (4/17) – if we don’t sell out before then. Just think of all the extra time you’ll have to hide those eggs.
And, yes, the Easter Bunny is bringing more soft shell crabs tomorrow.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
