Greetings from Carrboro,
Facebook gets it. People like to connect. We watch friends’ children grow up on the other side of the country and allow that past investment of intimacy to charge those pictures with a visceral richness that almost – almost – rings true. But it is really only an echo – Narcissus’ jilted lover – that crosses the digital divide. But then, in truth, what are our choices? When will we have the time to fly to Denver or wherever, sit down at a table, and really connect? The iPhone superhighway is so much easier.
Technology does that. It creates ease. I can order moonfish from Hawaii today and serve it tomorrow night. Organic apples from Chile? No problem. But in the rush forward, it is those most intimate pathways that connect all of us to this place – our home – that have fallen into dramatic disrepair. And if those paths disappear, God help us. At some point, every echo goes silent.
That’s why Firsthand Foods matters. When Jennifer Curtis and Tina Prevatte Levy began the messy, essential hard work of connecting local meat producers to local customers, they had to start from scratch. They had to build enduring relationships of trust and to hold fast to the abiding faith that local is worth fighting for. And that takes courage. The food world isn’t kind; there are vast bankruptcies built on the backs of good intentions. But Firsthand survived. And thrived. And is fundamentally changing how our food community connects.
So join us on Wednesday, May 29th as we welcome the team from Firsthand Foods to Acme for dinner as part of our 2019 Meet the Maker series (or in this case, Meat the Makers). It’s dinner and it’s a conversation. It’s an intimate chance to meet the people making a difference in the essential foodways that knit this community together. Tickets for the dinner are $45 and can only be purchased by calling the restaurant (919 929 2263). Menu is below. There are a limited number of tickets and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. I hope that you can join us.
PS- Soft shell crabs are back – starting tomorrow night!
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
