Greetings from Carrboro,
It’s hard for me to let things go. I have boxes in the attic full of the myriad dreams of who I wanted to be. My Wilson A2000 baseball glove that I haven’t used in 30+ years. The first 50 pages of that great novel I was supposed to write. A picture of me holding my now 21-year-old daughter as a child, that naive young man still full of the profound hope to be a certain kind of father that I would never quite grow to be. All that longing doesn’t go away.
Then there are the things that don’t let go of me. Those things that emerge over time. Slowly and confidently. And the clear way they define who I really am — not who I ever was or wanted to be. This food. This restaurant. All of you great people. My life is full in so many ways that I never could have dreamed.
And in its 7th iteration, I have to add Salt & Smoke to that list. The party that turned into a festival that turned into a tradition. Like for a lot of you, I can’t imagine fall without it.
In truth, it kind of is fall — squeezed into one perfect day. This year it will be Saturday, November 9th when Salt & Smoke VII takes over Rock Quarry Farm on 54 just outside of town.
For those of you new to the game, you can check out this story in Our State Magazine (#humblebrag) about our party. In short, Salt & Smoke is live music all day, our world-famous whole-hog barbecue, oysters on the half-shell & roasted clams from Shooting Point Oyster Co., all the right Southern sides, local beer from Foothills Brewing, cocktails from Topo Organic Distillery, wine from De Maison Selections, an insane magician, and 500 of our favorite people. What more could you want from a Saturday? In my mind, it’s just about the best day of the year. And you’re invited.
This week only – thru 9/17 – all tickets are $20 off when you use discount code “GETTHATD” (D is for discount, you perv). Because, well, we love you. And all your friends, too. Full details below.
This weekend @ Acme: soft-shell crabs. Bone-in local pork chops. Shooting Point Oysters on the half-shell. Acme tomato plate. Double-decker smash burger. Southern tomato pie. Alabama stack cake. Chili relleno. Brussels’ sprouts. Line-caught NC tuna. End of summer risotto. Wedge salad. Peel-n-eat shrimp. Scuppernong pie. Pecan-crusted fried chicken. Watermelon sangria. Bone-in ribeye steaks. Calamari. Cold beer. Life is definitely delicious.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
