Greetings from Carrboro,
It’s a little creepy. They’re always just so chipper, so California. Part of me thinks that they should sound like some old school sci-fi robot or, you know, C3PO. Or even better – Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator. But when a Google Assistant calls the restaurant to make a reservation, the voice actually sounds like an overeducated 28 year-old barista who gardens in their spare time.
Technology. Schmectology.
I, for one, am not fully prepared to have lengthy dialogues with a clever computer. Unless it can make me a sandwich. A really good sandwich. And as of lunch o’clock today, Siri still refused my request, citing “condiment” issues. So it’s nice that not everything is solved by an algorithm. Not yet, at least. Pleasure still seems a decidedly human endeavor. Thank god.
And speaking of pleasure – hello there, Valentine’s Day. It’s a week from tomorrow for those of you playing at home. Tick. Tock. And if you’re honestly thinking that a Whitman’s Sampler and grocery store roses will suffice – again – may the gods help you. Because let me assure you that you don’t want to be that person. No. That’s like showing up to race the Daytona 500 with a 2004 Pontiac Vibe.
So may I recommend mixing it up a bit. Or a lot. Originality is always a good plan. To that end, at 11am the morning after Valentine’s, Acme is going to rock our third Drag Brunch: the Candy Hearts Rendition. It’s brunch. With day drinking. And an off the hook drag show. See, that’s what I’m talking about. A seriously bad-ass present for anyone and everyone you love. So put that box of chocolates down and walk away. You can thank me later.
