Greetings from Carrboro,
I really don’t miss them. At all. And Fridays were by far the worst. Sometime around 9am the calls would start. And wouldn’t stop. It was beaten into us that every call was a customer so there were clips on the phone that allowed me to attach the phone to my apron as we prepped in the kitchen. Reservations. Insurance cold calls. People wanting to know Weaver Street’s phone number or complaining that we weren’t open for lunch since we were obviously at the restaurant. The litany was endless.
And then the internet stopped the madness. Now when the phone rings it’s the occasional not-to-be-missed investment tip, someone who wants a reservation and claims that the internet doesn’t work and that we should fix it, or people with very specific questions. This time of year those people ask us basically two things: 1) Do you have soft shell crabs tonight? 2) Is your tomato plate back on the menu?
And today I can happily say “yes” to both. While I get that Friday the 13th is meant to bring a shroud of bad luck with triskaidekaphobia and all that. Having soft shells and tomato plates on the same night feels like we won the lottery (ok, like a $20 scratch-off. Nothing too crazy. But still, woohoo!). Though I must admit that it’s not such a lucky day for the crabs.
You know the drill. Soft shell crabs with rice, arugula, and romesco sauce. And the Acme tomato plate – local tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, deviled eggs, summer squash pickles, crunchy salt. The world can be a pretty crazy place these days. We like to think we can help.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
