Greetings from Carrboro,
The general rule is one size fits most. Occasionally a restaurant will offer two different pour sizes for a glass of the same wine. Or a bar will offer what’s called a “short” beer. But by and large people don’t drink various sized cocktails. At least in a public setting. There have been a few times in people’s homes that I’ve been served alcoholic concoctions in a vessel the size of a nordic victory chalice. In those instances, I pray that my surreptitious libations didn’t kill any innocent houseplants. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
But that doesn’t happen in restaurants or bars. Probably excluding Florida and Las Vegas, there are no drink menus with jumbo Harvey Wallbangers or big gulp martinis or similarly super-sized cocktails. With one clear exception: margaritas. Restaurant supply stores sell 40 ounce margarita glasses. For those of you playing at home, that is not a small drink. And it’s not uncommon to see even larger fishbowls with a salty rim on restaurant tables. It seems that people just can’t get enough liquid happiness. It’s gotten to the point where margaritas should probably be their own category of drink.
And since today, February 22nd, is National Margarita Day, we thought it would be a good idea to pile on the bandwagon. Because, why not? And, come on, it’s nearly Friday. So in honor, both Acme and Atlas will have 4 additonal flavors of margaritas* to help you start your weekend early. And start it well. You know you deserve it. And if you need an additional rationale, the margaritas are a mere $7. Basically BOGO for those of you acronymically inclined. To be clear, we will leave the fishbowls to someone else.
IN food news, the Acme kitchen got some beautiful monkfish and black drum from our neighbor, Salvador, at Tom Robinson’s today. By far the freshest seafood around. We will hopefully have it all weekend long. And our oysters from Shooting Point Oyster Co. have been out of the world recently. I feel pretty confident that margaritas and oysters go really well together.
This weekend @ Acme: Winter Gumbo. Pecan-crusted fried chicken. Pan-seared monkfish with shrimp and tasso ham étouffée. Acme wedge salad. Shrimp and oyster po’ boy sliders. Honey Pie. Chili-rubbed ribeye steaks. Acme cornbread. Coquilles Saint Jacques. And a vegetarian version with roasted cauliflower. Blackened salmon. Southern mushroom pie. Acme Brussels’ sprouts. Key lime pie. Ice-cold martinis. Acme smashburgers. Forever roasted pig. Deviled eggs. Crab cakes. Coconut cake. Hungry, yet?
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
