Greetings from Carrboro,
There are signs. And then there are signs. It’s certainly true that when your car takes on a certain yellowish hue or when droves of people suddenly appear on neighborhood streets imbued with newfound fantasies of fitness, it’s a pretty clear sign of spring – or, at least, some sign of winter’s retreat. But in my world, all of that pales to the real signs that promise warmer weather. Strawberries and soft shell crabs. And this week, both of those boxes were checked. Helloooo, spring.
So, you can put those wool sweaters away now. And, well, grab a fork.
People have been calling since mid-March about crabs; they always do. And we’ve been eagerly waiting for their arrival. Needless to say, it was with a fair amount of glee that I heard the news from Salvador yesterday that, yes, soft shell crab season has begun. As it’s just the beginning of the season, there were only a small number available. But we got all we could, enough for 24 orders. With locally farmed arugula, rice, and romesco sauce, the crispy crabs might make you swoon. The only downside is that we will run out. But there’s always next week.
And the strawberries made their grand entrance yesterday. A tad sandy but glorious. I nearly overdosed. The dramatic gulf between the flavor of locally farmed berries that are in season and, really, any other incarnation is vast. Like, you know, Pacific Ocean vast. So, why wait? Starting tonight, we’re going all in: sweet biscuit strawberry shortcake, strawberry margaritas, and a classic, three-tiered strawberry cake – just because Martha likes to show off.
And I can’t imagine that Easter weekend (next weekend, April 18-20) won’t be awash in both. Easter brunch especially. Lucky you.
Speaking of luck, there are still about 20 of our Easter Feasts for Two available for those who prefer to have their Easter dinner at home. Without the inevitable cooking or shopping or worrying. That’s our job. And, of course, making it delicious. I think you can see the upside. The cost for the meal is $75 and the menu is below. Pick up is on Saturday, the 19th, between 1pm-3pm.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
