Greetings from Carrboro,
Oh, 2020. I should’ve read the fine print and swiped left. Your profile promises of a wild ride mixed with excellent cocktails and unlimited Netflix and chill got me, though. Admittedly, the word “pandemic” down at the bottom should have set off alarms. But, hey, that’s all Monday morning quarterback stuff now. Live and learn. That’s what they say. Well, I’ve learned one thing; our parting ways won’t break my heart. Though I do still kinda like the loungewear part.
Now, 2021. To be clear, your profile pledge “to not suck as bad as 2020” does have a practical allure. But is it too much to ask for a little more than that? Like going to a movie or a concert? Or walking through the grocery store and not wanting to swat each person who sports a mask that only covers their mouth?
And less Twitter. Please. But I think that I speak for everyone when I say that I’m fine with more dog videos. And while you’re at it, more Dreamers and kindness and justice and hope. And I’d really like my restaurant back. I miss everyone. A lot.
So for those similarly trepidatious about swiping right on 2021, all of us at Acme are doing what we can to usher in the new year with as much health, wealth, and luck as possible. We’re going to spend the week cooking our version of the traditional southern New Year’s Day feast. Whole hog barbecue, smoked pork ribs, collard greens, hoppin’ John, squash pickles, and macaroni & cheese. And sauce. Lots of sauce. We’ll also have cornbread and cinnamon rolls to add to the spread. Be forewarned; we will run out at some point. And while I don’t have a crystal ball to let you know how 2021 will unfold, I feel really confident that I can guarantee that the first day will be delicious.
