Greetings from Carrboro,
Here we go. Again. The 24th Acme Tomato Festival cometh. July 10th-13th. Hallelujah and pass the Duke’s. Honestly, I’m not sure what July in Carrboro would be like without our annual belly-flop into our southern summer’s most delicious bounty. It’s a smorgasbord celebrating the fabulous farmers that grow the tomatoes and, yes, all of us who make sure all that hard work doesn’t go to waste. To paraphrase Elizabeth Barrett Browning, How do I eat thee? Let me count the ways.
Pied and fried. Sliced and diced. Toasted and oven-roasted. Flayed and sauteed. You get the idea. Hundreds and hundreds of pounds of the best tomatoes grown anywhere in the world – all for your dining pleasure. Everything on the menu will be tomato-fied – even tomato desserts. And, yes, cocktails. I mean, we don’t call it a festival for nothing.
There will be tomato gravy, tomato chutney, tomato tartare, tomato pie, tomato salsa, tomato you-name-it. If you can imagine it, the dish will probably be on our menu. And we’ll use as many varieties as we can find. Because if you’ve got a serious tomato itch that needs to be scratched, we’re here for you.
Not that we’re not here for any of you with an okra itch, or a melon itch, or a smashburger itch, or, well, an it’s-too-damn-hot-to-cook itch. Because we are. No question. And it’s Friday, for heaven’s sake. And hot as bejeezus. Close your eyes and listen. That sound you hear is delicious calling. I think we can agree that you’ve earned it.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
