Greetings from Carrboro,
I’m pretty sure that there were only black & white TVs. With rabbit ears. The reception was often poor and the teachers would have to drag the A/V cart close to the window for the best picture. But nobody cared. Watching the ACC tournament at school, the classroom lights off and blinds pulled, was better than a snow day.
Spring is always tinged with that tournament nostalgia for me. Shooting basketball in the driveway during each halftime, pretending to be Walter Davis. My parents remarkably allowing us to eat dinner in front of the TV. And my mother not scolding us when we booed Lenny Wirtz. Miracle after miracle after miracle. You gotta love this time of year.
And at the restaurant, the tournament almost always coincides with St. Patrick’s Day. So those flavors now are interlaced with all the other nostalgia. Corned beef. Smoked salmon and scallop shepherd’s pie. Sticky toffee pudding. Beef & Guinness pie. Irish soda bread. Lamb country captain. Fish & chips. Lucky Charms sundae. And plenty of whiskey and stout, etc to aid with the usual shenanigans. You gotta admit that it just makes this time of year that much better. Especially if you get to eat dinner outdoors. (Yes, this does mean that our patio is open.)
So, starting tomorrow and through to St. Patrick’s Day itself – Monday, the 17th – Acme’s kitchen and bar will be trotting out our Gaelic bona fides in delicious fashion. And watching a little basketball to boot. Because regardless of who you cheer for, a little Irish luck never hurt anyone. Or a little corned beef, for that matter.
At 3:30pm this Sunday, the 16th, Atlas is gearing up for St. Patty’s day with a deep-dive into the pure pleasure of Irish whiskey. It will be a comparative tasting of three distinct offerings from the famed Middleton Distillery, beginning with a welcome cocktail and concluding with a pour of their stunning “Very Rare” release. Tickets for the tasting are $40. And as with all the classes that are held at Atlas, each participant will get to take their whiskey glass home with them.
Important reminder: the new parking deck behind the restaurant is open for your parking pleasure. Try it out. Carrboro got a serious upgrade.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
