Greetings from Carrboro,
The Schnoz loved it. Well, the Schnoz and his wife loved it. And the rest is history. It’s one of those stories that proves the adage that you earn your luck.
World War 2 had just ended. And radio is king. Among the pantheon of the airwave gods is Jimmy Durante – the ultimate New Yorker, the musician, the actor, the comic. The Schnoz. His weekly radio show is listened to by millions. One night he signs off mysteriously, “Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” And it becomes his trademark. On radio and then, later, on TV. You can’t just buy publicity like that.
So, like that, Calabash, a small North Carolina fishing villa
ge, becomes a destination. And then a legend. For a delicious style of seafood that would, over the years, become synonymous with the name Calabash itself. Fresh Carolina shrimp, flounder, and oysters perfectly fried. With hushpuppies (the sweet kind), corn on the cob, and coleslaw to round out the feast. As a kid, my family couldn’t go to the beach without at least one drool-inducing pilgrimage.
But its 2017 and I’m stuck in Orange County. No sand or surf in sight. And it’s August. So I’m bringing Calabash to Carrboro. Again. By oh-so-popular demand. Calabash Night at Acme. Wednesday, August 16th – all night long. It’s gonna be big. Wear flip-flops, cheap sunglasses, and then cover yourself in coconut-y sunscreen for the full effect. Bonus points if you wear a shell necklace you made yourself. Authenticity, as always, matters. But above all, get ready for delicious.
Until then, goodnight, Mrs. Carrboro, wherever you are.
