Greetings from Carrboro,
You know the list. Scotch drinkers are East Coast business types in well-polished wingtips, while their West Coast counterparts drink tequila in flip-flops. Gin drinkers complain about their second marriage, whereas vodka drinkers energetically go in search of their first. And brandy drinkers are jaded characters in novels that bourbon drinkers claim to be writing.
And rum drinkers? Most people immediately think of peg-leg pirates and spring-breakers. So we dismiss rum off-hand as frivolous and fear any drink that includes rum might well arrive festooned with a colorful umbrella, God forbid, and ego-deflating snickers from the other bar patrons. But it should be no surprise that stereotypes often get in the way. Because even though rum is delicious and far, far more serious than people know, it tends to be utterly disregarded. Well, we wholeheartedly believe the time is ripe for rum to make a comeback.

So, this Sunday, September 13th, Atlas will welcome Nate Windham, head bartender at Fitzgerald and Faulkner, for a fascinating class exploring the history of rum via a guided tasting. From its origins and remarkable global impact to the ways each island shaped its own unique flavor—and the rise and fall and, yes, rise of the tiki movement—Nate will lead us on an educational and sensory experience not to be missed.
The class will begin at 2pm and will include appropriately themed snacks from Acme. Tickets are $49, with tax, gratuity, and paper umbrella included.
Also on Sunday @ Atlas is The Olive Road Spritz-fest. Starting at 5pm we’ll have proper beverages and snacks and also provide the low-down about our fall ‘27 trip to Tuscany in collaboration with Chapel Hill’s Bloom Yoga. It’s a great chance to ask questions and meet all the people leading the week-long retreat. If castles and wine and warrior pose speak to you, I think you should join us; we’re taking self-care to a new level.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme & Atlas
