Greetings from Carrboro,
I went through three different times. The Great Hall at UNC’s student union had morphed into a showroom of sorts. A somewhat new company, Apple, was showing off its latest “home” computer, the MacIntosh, to students like me. And I was a fan. Well, I should be clear; I was mostly a fan of the glorious MacIntosh apples that they were handing out once you’d seen their demo. Computers are all well and good, but a really good apple is a wonder of a whole other dimension.
Looking back, I tend to believe that those oh-so tasty apples led me to buy my first computer – my stomach tends to be overly influential in a great many decisions in my life, big and small. And I must say that I was a tad dismayed that their IOS updates didn’t follow the apple variety path. You know, “want to upgrade to Golden Delicious now or overnight?” But, again, that’s probably just me.
And this time of year, a good apple is hard to beat. Forget the deep-fried gummy bears, I think – hands down – that my favorite thing at the State Fair is the apple cider that they sell down by the mill. Sure, let pumpkin spice get all the press, but I’ll take good ol’ apple spice anyday. Apple cobbler. Apple Spritz. Apple with pan-seared duck and rutabagas. It’s fall. Deep down, you know that sounds delicious. And, surprise, surprise, we just happen to be serving each of the above this weekend. Thankfully, you don’t even have to bob for an apple to win that prize. Or, like, buy a computer.
And, yes, butterscotch pudding is BACK. Just like we promised.
