Greetings from Carrboro,
It wasn’t as if I thought lightning was going to strike. But I did have the sense that another shoe was about to drop. I, for one, definitely felt that we had moved into possibly rough and uncharted waters. And then, well, nothing happened. Nada. Zilch. Standing on the steps of my college dorm, I found myself tossed into a brave – very un-Southern – new world. A college friend unapologetically called his mother by her first name.
I don’t think that I ever called my mother Louise. She was Mom. With all the formidable powers bestowed with that title. Just like her mother and all the rest down the line. But that formality has long gone the way of landlines and paper routes. So when Mother’s Day comes around, I know that my rather Rockwell-ian vision is well past its sell-by date. And then some.
So, what’s a restaurant to do? How do you properly celebrate all those spectacular, funny, smart, and hip women who also happen to be scintillating parents? Certainly not by buying them a new apron. We prefer what we call Acme Mother’s Day. It’s our annual homage to all things mom. On Wednesday, May 8th, we will roll out the red carpet for all those wonderful women by treating them to dinner. Translation: every entrée for every mom is on us. Louise would definitely approve.
By no means is that meant to overshadow the big day. Far from it. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12th, and Acme will be open 10am – 9pm so that all of you have ample time to properly fête the dynamic mom in your life. Festive bonnets are completely optional. But reservations are not. Graduation ceremonies throughout the weekend will bring lots of people from far and wide to our fair city, so consider yourself warned. Please know that the waitlist function through our reservation system, Tock, works very well and that more often than not we are able to fulfill those requests within a day or so. It’s going to be a great day.
This Saturday, May 4th, is the Kentucky Derby. And Atlas wouldn’t be a proper cocktail bar if we didn’t celebrate the Run for the Roses with mint juleps and similarly inspired tipples for the fastest two minutes in sports. It’s also Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you) so anyone arriving with a lightsaber and a properly festooned fedora will certainly be the winner in our book. The race will start promptly at 6:57. We recommend that you get there in plenty of time to partake in all the pre-race festivities.
Yes, we do have soft shell crabs this weekend. And that’s just the tip of a very delicious iceberg. Also, lest you forget, every entrée at brunch this sunday is just $10. Biscuits and waffles and cinnamon rolls, oh my. It doesn’t get much better. OK, except when you add a mimosa. Or two.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
