Greetings from Carrboro,
I was born into it. So, don’t blame me. My father was the radio announcer for Carolina basketball and football in the 1960s. Needless to say, our entire family were rabid fans. And if you were wondering, yes, we hated Billy Packer. Basketball mania was so bad in our family that I still refuse to admit the year when I finally realized that the dean’s list had nothing to do with Dean Smith.
So I get the madness when UNC plays Duke. As a kid, we’d play one-on-one all day in preparation. I’d pretend to be UNC’s Mike O’Koren and my best friend – a Duke fan – pretended to be Duke’s Jim Spanarkle. He was a better basketball player – so sadly Duke won the majority of those driveway matchups. Nowadays, friends pull on their “good luck” socks and send me texts from 7 in the morning onward rationalizing why Carolina will win with all the analytical mumbo-jumbo the internet gushes whenever the rivalry looms. “It’ll come down to Carolina making free throws in the last 5 minutes and our guards not cutting under ball screens.” These are the high-minded stories certain adults tell themselves so they don’t start drinking before noon.

And at Acme, after 28 years we fully understand that a lot – a lot – of people are not planning to leave the house and go out for dinner Saturday night. To paraphrase Woody Durham, people are going to “go where they go and do what they do.” Basketball rituals are real. So we thought we should do what we do, too. Why not? And that means preparing an Acme Gameday Takeout Feast for hungry fans to eat at halftime or, you know, during the game or whenever. No cooking or shopping. And plus it’ll give you tons more time to work on your face paint.
The Acme Big Game Takeout Extravaganza. Old School Cheese-y Tamale Pie. Chicken Drumsticks cooked like wings in our own BBQ chicken sauce. Down East Hot Collard Dip and Acme Field Pea Hummus with crackers. Cheesecake swirl brownies. The feast will easily feed two hungry fans. And each feast is $68. Pickup is 2pm – 4pm on the Acme patio. It’s the best way to make sure that you’re the real winner on Saturday – no matter the outcome of the game.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The Staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
