Greetings from Carrboro,
My parents somehow got a cat. And a dozen downed trees in their front yard. That was Hurricane Hugo. And three days after Katrina, Acme got a talented sous chef (and family) for a month or so after their home and livelihood in New Orleans was destroyed overnight. They packed everything they had into a car and fled, ending up here before permanently moving to DC and full time employment.
Now, Ian is knocking at our door. And with it, a new art show starts tomorrow at Acme with paintings by Adam Cohen, a super-talented friend of mine from Raleigh. As they say, when it rains, it pours. But there is a very special segue tonight before we hang the new pieces. This evening (Thursday) some very lucky soul will get to take home a framed print from our current show – Thom Middlebrook’s mostly black & white photographs that are like windows into the soul of the great city of New Orleans. I think you’ll agree that it’s better to have a hurricane provide you with a wonderful piece of art and not just a very, very soggy weekend. Not quite a cat, but you get the idea.
Here’s how it works: Come by tonight for a bite or a drink or just to check out the photographs and enter your name into the drawing. Thom will be here for questions or, you know, unbridled adulation; either works for him. If you’ve never taken the time to really look at the images, gosh they’re good. And then at the close of service we will select the lucky winner and notify by email. That could be you. Tonight’s forecast – windy with a good chance of art. Not bad.
And tonight is Acme’s Almost Friday $15. Every entrée, every Thursday is $15. The weekend starts here. Who knows? Your dinner might even come with a side of photography. That doesn’t happen every day.
This weekend @ Acme: Pecan-crusted fried chicken. Pumpkin whoopie pies. Watercress salad. Acme Brussels’ sprouts. Cast-iron crab cakes. Wedge salad. Butter beans. Pecan pie. Cold beer. Blackened Salmon. Southern tomato pie. Acme deluxe smash burger. Shooting point oysters. Warm apple cobbler. Strong drinks. Fish & chips. Martha’s chile relleno. Deviled eggs. Forever roasted pig. Butternut squash risotto. Don’t forget your umbrella. We’ve got the rest.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
