It’s a holiday tradition. Though, to be honest, I can’t point to the exact day on the advent calendar. But it seems to always be about now. Quite religiously I wake up one morning and abandon a good 60% of what I’d hoped to accomplish pre-Christmas. It’s not the crazy stuff like handmade wreaths and snowman shaped suet logs that always sort of fall to the wayside along with that last bite of Thanksgiving pie. But more this mid-December purge of anxiety surrounding a litany of holiday fantasies – you know, end-of-year letter writing, inspired gifting, sound mental health – that I’m specifically talking about. It’s like an annual Christmas cleanse, minus the fiber. But the next day I sincerely do feel lighter and oh-so relieved.

A good part of this seasonal solace grows from when I figured out that it was ok to know how to give, if not exactly what. All the unease around ‘would she wear a scarf?’ or ‘do they drink Champagne?’ wore me out. But then I discovered the beauty of gift cards. Hallelujah.
