Greetings from Carrboro,
I get the fantasy. This idea that eating the right food in the right combination will lead to eternal life. The magical allure of ancient grains and fruits and herbs. That somehow kombucha and cold pressed juices were the ingredients missing in our forebearer’s attempted recipe for a lifetime of bliss. That, lucky for us, everlasting youth has a 21st century formula. And you can buy all the ingredients at Whole Foods.
But the older I get, the more I understand the shocking brevity of life. And appreciate its fragile sweetness. Somehow, to really enjoy the urgent ripeness of summer requires savoring the truth that the season will eventually end. And carrying those first boxes of tomatoes into the kitchen this week, redolent of so many summers past, I couldn’t help but think about all the oh-my-god tomato sandwiches that I’ve had in my life. How many times I’ve leaned over the kitchen sink, tomato juice running down my arm, enjoying each bite as if it were my last. Soul food if ever there was such a thing. Life’s wondrous pleasure in its simplest form; less açai and more Duke’s.
But it’s only June. And the joys of tomato season have just begun. Can I get a hallelujah? So that means Acme tomato plates – amazing local tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, deviled eggs, and pickled squash. You know the one. And if that doesn’t get your heart pounding, check your pulse. And this year we’ve upped the ante. We’ve bought some stunningly beautiful plates from Haand in Burlington that were made specifically for us – and for our Acme Tomato Plate. If you’re longing for your first belly flop into summer, we got you. It is Friday, after all. And if you have dreams of eternity, we do sell lots of bourbon.
Well, that’s all the news from Carrboro. The staff at Acme look forward to serving you soon.
Cheers,
The Staff at Acme
